Four Alachua County High School Students Named Qualifiers in USA Math Olympiad Competion.
Four Alachua County students from Buchholz and Eastside High Schools earned the title of Qualifiers in this year’s Math Olympiad competition. Buchholz High School seniors Jake Frazer and Samuel Kim, BHS freshman Andrew Xing and Eastside High School senior Atharva Pathak were four of only 11 Florida students to earn this title.
The stakes for this competition were high — all four needed top scores in two prior math competitions. After qualifying, each student took a nine-hour test administered by the Mathematical Association of America to decide who would be named an Olympiad. The Olympiads go on to represent the U.S. Math Olympiad team and compete against other teams worldwide. Being named an Olympiad is one of the highest honors in math a student can receive.
Middle school students are also invited to participate in the United States Junior Math Olympiad. For this competition, two Alachua County students earned the title of Qualifier. Buchholz sophomores Will Guam and Daniel Wang became two of only 300 Junior Qualifiers in the nation.
While this was BHS freshman Andrew Xing’s first USAMO competition at the high school level, that is not the case for BHS Senior Jake Frazer. In fact, this is his fifth time being named USAMO Qualifier, breaking Alachua County’s record. Not only is Frazer shattering local records, but he is one of just six seniors in the nation to be a Qualifier for the fifth consecutive year.
These students’ incredible accomplishments in mathematics are outstanding achievements. Alachua County is honored to have such bright young minds representing the district so well.
