Why Greater Gainesville? Darcie Burde

For Darcie Burde, student athletics and recreation at the University of Florida is a family affair. She is the Senior Associate Director for Fitness and Wellness, and her husband is the Assistant Coach for Women’s Gymnastics.

My husband and I relocated here from Lincoln, Nebraska 15 years ago for job opportunities at UF. The differences between Florida and the Midwest were surprising at first. I quickly learned to appreciate the cultural diversity, and it’s one of my favorite things about this area. I am grateful for the opportunity to broaden my perspective and meet people that think differently than I do. There’s such a variety of people from all over the world that live here, and I’ve learned so much. I experience life in a different way that is more enriching.

Greater Gainesville has been a place where I’ve been able to grow and develop personally as well as professionally. I’m fortunate to work for an employer that has provided fantastic growth opportunities and a progressive work environment. I also appreciate being in an academic community.

On weekends, I love the fact that we can take our daughter to a farmers market all year round. We enjoy supporting our local farmers and connecting with others that contribute so much to our local community.

We are blessed to not have to travel far to visit the springs and see such gorgeous water and green surrounding it. Our frequent day trips to go paddling allow us to be fully immersed in nature and escape from a busy week.

I also encourage everyone to check out the restaurants in Greater Gainesville. We have a solid local food scene with some excellent chefs in town.

As a fitness professional, I continue to be impressed with the range of options, from large gyms to boutique studios with specialized offerings. This area offers many unique recreational opportunities with the plethora of nearby parks, trails, lakes and beaches available year-round due to our warm climate. If there is a hobby or leisure activity you want to try, chances are that exists here.
