Pet Staycation

By Drew Mortier

Who can forget the first time they brought home that furry new addition to the family? This is not a story about designer wigs—rather, those beloved canines and felines providing companionship to folks all over Greater Gainesville (GG). But pet owners need vacations too, leaving some to wonder, “What do I do with my dog/cat/surprisingly emotive gerbil?”

Thankfully, GG is peppered with stellar options for temporary pet care. Vacationing pet owners want to leave their companions in the hands of caring, professional and accountable staff. Forget the ramshackle joint with the sign declaring, What happens in the doghouse stays in the doghouse. Here are GG’s best, most trustworthy places to drop off pets—no sweat.

Must Love Dogs

15 acres of grassy paradise and two ponds make for some dang fine off-leash play opportunities. Must Love Dogs is a private park with membership opportunities, although non-members are welcome to check in with the office for entry during certain hours. Boarding is cage-free, and the pups get to play together all day in the park – they might not want to come home after a resort like this!

Prestige Pet Resort & Spa

A certified master groomer attends the renowned Prestige Pet Resort and Spa, so expect things like hip haircuts and dashing neckerchiefs for that special pup. One reviewer on their website recounts the excitement their dog visibly displays when approaching the building. Staff Kristin Timmons and the aptly named “Linda Woulf” are excited to meet new pets and provide top notch care during owner vacations.

Archer Road Pet Resort

Operated by residents of the historic Haille Plantation, booking a visit to Archer Road means bathing, grooming and outdoor exercise. Pups can expect an acre of land, 25+ years of experience and complete grooming facilities. These guys are especially devoted to peace of mind for pet owners, and that is something worth paying for.

Jazz’s Wonderland

Billing itself as “a little piece of puppy heaven on earth,” Jazz’s Wonderland is run by Stefan and Ana Mann. Ana grew up rescuing dogs with her dad in Brazil. If a lifetime of pup rescuing is any indication, dogs visiting Jazz’s Wonderland are in good hands. To check a pup in, owners must bring their dog for a meet and greet. They want to ensure a strong match between pet and staff, so you know these folks take pet care pretty seriously.

Camp Run-a-Mutt

At Camp Run-a-Mutt, “snuggles and love are staples” for staff members—with pets, not customers. This camp is totally cage-free, and visiting pups are never alone. They will be with either a human or canine companion during the stay. Splash ponds and a waterfall are available for play and ambience, and “muttcams” offer pet owners the chance to check in with their canine companions while they are away.
