Q&A with Geoff Wilson

1) Why did you decide to pursue professional speaking?

I wouldn’t say I have pursued it too actively, but I do sometimes apply to speak at various conference and events if I think they will provide good promotion for my company, 352 Inc. Some opportunities have found their way to me, too. My dad, who was an attorney, spoke often at legal events and made some good connections that way, so I knew it would be important for me to do the same.

2) What was your first “gig”? How did it come about?

Actually, back in high school I was asked to teach computer and Internet classes. I was 14 years old, and I was teaching rooms of people four or five times my age. Also, a local TV station in Sarasota asked me to do a video series about getting on the Internet, which they broadcast in 1994.

3) How do you juggle running a business and speaking engagements?

My business comes first, so I only pursue speaking engagements that I feel will provide good promotion for my business or provide goodwill to the community.

4) What is your advice to others who are considering following in your footsteps?

Watch other really good speakers, and emulate what they do. Much of the success of a speech comes down to your pace, tone, inflection (especially at key moments), genuineness and infusion of personality.

5) What are your must-dos or must-haves when you speak?

I like having a PowerPoint to give the audience some visuals as I speak, which also helps to keep me on track, but my PowerPoints have almost no words — I mainly use interesting visuals or photos. I find that keeps the audience more tuned in to your message.
