Gainesville’s Arthur Rutenberg Homes/Barry Rutenberg and Associates won silver in the Best in American Living Awards January 10 at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando. The builder won in the Kitchen Interior Design category for its Novara 1445 Model Home Center located at 2807 S.W. 117th St. in the Oakmont master-planned community.
The kitchen features a sleek, contemporary design with a brown and white color palette. Designed with comfort and function in mind, the large quartz island doubles as a dining space and work area large enough to roll pasta dough. The kitchen’s home management center is the ideal spot for children to do homework while mom or dad cooks dinner.

Phalanx Defense Systems, LLC has been awarded a patent on the first-of-its-kind foreign body testing system for clothing, safety garments and medical wear. The system will aid in identifying carcinogens, bacteria and viruses found in some work environments. It will also identify harsh environmental residues that build up on various garments, such as turnout or bunker gear used by Fire Rescue personnel.
“Our patented system allows safety and medical gear manufacturers in many industries to add one more layer of protection and safety for our first responders and medical professionals who put themselves in danger everyday just by going to work,” said James Coats, CEO of Phalanx Defense Systems.
Phalanx’s new patent allows for any garment to be tested for various foreign and harmful properties without removing the garment from service. More important, it does it without intrusive and uncomfortable devices or added weight. The garment can be tested over regular intervals, and if it tested positive for the various contaminates or foreign bodies, it can be correctly decontaminated or properly disposed of, thus reducing exposure to the wearer.
In order to focus on this innovation, Phalanx will be creating an entirely new biomedical division, which will be located at Phalanx’s East Gainesville headquarters. This new division will focus on bringing this technology to the many markets that can utilize it.
“The sooner we can get this technology into the hands of others the more lives we can save” said Coats. “We have already been in discussions with several large companies in the medical, sports and safety industries.”

Hilger received her Bachelor of Science degree from Boston College with a concentration in accounting. She comes to James Moore from Ernst & Young in Orlando, Florida.
Irvan earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting, as well as a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Ning received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of North Florida, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and Japanese from Florida State University.

Accounting Association CPAmerica International celebrates 40th Anniversary. The 40th anniversary of CPAmerica International, an accounting association of independent certified public accounting firms that provides shared best practices, networking opportunities and access to expert resources for member firms, will be May 11, 2018.
In 1978, eight firms came together under the common belief that they could accomplish more by learning from each other than they could on their own. Together they created the accounting association, Accounting Firms Associated, Inc. By 1990, the association had grown to include 43 firms. That same association went on to become CPAmerica, currently made up of 74 independent CPA firms across the United States.
“We are at an exciting time in the association’s development,” said Alan Deichler, president of CPAmerica. “Associations have drastically changed in the last 40 years and now more than ever we have the opportunity to contribute to our member’s growth and development.”
In honor of the association’s 40th anniversary, CPAmerica plans to commemorate this milestone throughout the year, including both the inception date of May 11, and reaching a pinnacle at the annual Leading Partners Retreat in September.
CPAmerica International promotes D’Yãn Davis to Director of Member Services and Lauren Bush to Director of Finance and Human Resources.
Davis joined CPAmerica in 2015 after working as a firm administrator and human resources director at a local accounting firm. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Central Florida. In this role, Davis is responsible for the management of the Senior Member Services team which develops resources and provides day-to-day support for CPAmerica and CPAConnect member firms.
Bush joined CPAmerica in 2008 after working as an attorney and staff accountant in north Florida. She received her Bachelor of Arts at Binghamton University, and her Juris Doctor at the New York Law School. In her new role, Bush will oversee all aspects of the finance department, and will continue to handle human resources-related matters, including onboarding/offboarding, and salary and benefit plan responsibilities.
