GRU Leader Recognized by American Public Power Association
GRU’s community and government relations director, Nona Jones, received the American Public Power Association’s Robert. E. Roundtree Rising Star Award on June 17 in Denver. The award, given at the APPA National Conference, acknowledges future leaders of public power systems and includes a $2,000 scholarship for recipients to attend an APPA-sponsored program of their choice.
CHW to Provide Surveying for New Ocala FedEx Distribution Center
The new Ocala FedEx Hub Facility will be mapped and professionally surveyed by Causseaux, Hewett, & Walpole Inc., a Gainesville/Ocala-based engineering, land planning, surveying and construction engineering firm. According to a CHW press release, the projected 410,000-square-foot facility is projected to bring 165 full-time jobs and a capital improvement of $123 million to the Ocala and Marion County areas.
PGA Tour Golfers Gary Woodland and Camilo Villegas Sponsored by CDW
CDW, a leading provider of technology solutions for business, government, education and health care, announced its sponsorship of PGA Tour champions Gary Woodland and Camilo Villegas on June 25.
Villegas, a local golfer, played for Buddy Alexander’s Florida Gators men’s golf team from 2001 to 2004. Said Villegas in a press release, “I’m looking forward to working with CDW. I am excited to utilize their proven technology and expertise to hone my game.”
Philippines Ambassador Explores Trade Ties with Local Area
Gainesville area leaders showcased the community to the Philippine ambassador to the U.S. and other officials on June 24. During the visit, Ambassador Jose Cuisia Jr. outlined the business opportunities in the Philippines, a country of 100 million people that he said has one of the strongest economies in Southeast Asia.
“We are engaged in economic diplomacy-exploring trade opportunities and encouraging Filipino-Americans to invest in their home country,” Cuisia said during a breakfast at the Thomas Center.
Mayor Ed Braddy welcomed the Filipino delegation, saying, “We’re rapidly making this the best region in the state to find economic prosperity.”
Paracosm Runner-Up in CAT5 Competition
Recently a final-four contestant for the Cade Prize, the team behind Paracosm found itself earning a second-place finish at the Capital for the Acceleration of Technologies (CAT5) Awards on June 3 in Orlando.
The runner-up prize of $50,000 gives the 3D scanning and imaging technology company “validation,” according to Paracosm CEO Amir Rubin, who added, “It is really encouraging to have validation and community support when you’re an early-stage company.”
