Maintaining a healthy relationship can be a challenge, especially when busy schedules and the demands of life get in the way. However, making the time to prioritize a connection to one’s partner is essential to couples’ success, as they navigate the different chapters of life.
Although all relationships go through different phases, there are ways to build a bond that will help couples through the ups and downs of life together.
Dr. Carrie Grtto, mental health counselor and owner of Sojourn Counseling, said, “Connecting in general with your spouse comes with a lot of intentionality and effort. It is not organic in nature. You have to find the time and the energy to do that. It takes valuing relationships and being intentional with how you spend your time to make those relationships thrive.”
According to Gratto, setting aside time for your relationship, even during busy periods, can improve the quality of connection and intimacy, regardless of the type of relationship.
“We have two children, so my husband and I put our teenager in charge of our younger child so we can go to a local eatery and talk uninterrupted. Maximizing even the small windows of time can help immensely.”
Gratto said, “Many times couples may be fighting, so making an effort, especially during those times, can help partners from building up resentment, since they are putting time toward reconnecting and communicating. Many couples state that is when it really matters most.”
Here are some tips for having a healthy relationship when a busy schedule requires an increased effort to stay connected.
For couples with no kids who are busy building careers:
- Schedule date nights: Even for just an hour or two, schedule a regular date night. This will give each other something to look forward to and ensure quality time.
- Communicate regularly: Make sure to communicate regularly, even just a quick text or phone call during the day. This helps keep connections strong and shows significant others that they are being thought of.
- Share calendars: Sharing calendars helps when planning around each other’s commitments.
For couples with kids who are busy with activities:
- Tackle family activities together: For those who have kids involved in sports and activities, try to involve one another as much as possible. Attend games or practices together and build a bond around shared involvement in the kids’ activities.
- Make time for family time: Even if it is just a family dinner once a week, prioritize family time. This helps parents stay connected and shows kids the importance of relationships.
- Hire a babysitter: There is no comparison for time alone with a significant other. Consider hiring a babysitter for a few hours to go out and do something together.
For empty-nester couples who may be disconnected:
- Try new things together: When feeling disconnected, try doing something new together. Take a class, go on a trip or adopt a new hobby together.
- Have regular check-ins: Set aside time each week to check in with each other and talk about each other’s feelings. This will help by addressing issues before they become more significant problems.
- Volunteer together: Volunteering together can be a great way to give back to the community and strengthen a relationship at the same time.
