ACEL Young Professional Spotlight: Choppy Hodes II

Choppy Hodes II
CPCU , Account Executive at Lee Crane Insurance

1. What do you like most about living in Gainesville?

Having lived in this great town for over a quarter of a century, it wasn’t until I moved away for the first time that I truly learned to appreciate Gainesville’s unique combination of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and college town atmosphere. From the year-round parks and recreational opportunities to the variety of musical festivals and art shows, Gainesville has something for just about everyone. I have especially enjoyed seeing how it has grown and continues to develop at a remarkable pace.

2. Tell me about your job or area of study.

I am an account executive at Crane & Hyatt Insurance, an insurance agency focusing on Property & Liability Insurance, mostly Home, Auto and Business. As an Independent Agency, we represent a number of different companies and thoroughly shop the market for the best coverages and rates. We also pride ourselves in our service and strive to treat each of our clients like family.

3. What are some of the biggest challenges you have encountered as a young professional?

Knowing when to ask for help, knowing when to tell people no, and knowing how to deliver bad news. Being prepared for these challenges can also be a challenge in itself as they aren’t always scheduled on the calendar but can spring up randomly when least expected. Keeping patient and calm can also be tough when juggling several tasks at once while constantly reassessing and shifting work priorities throughout the day.

4. What is one of the best pieces of advice you have ever been given?

“You gotta keep on keepin’ on. Life’s a garden: Dig it. You gotta make it work for you.” – Joe Dirt. A previous boss also once told me to “find the place where you are truly happy to live, and only then you will find your right path.”

5. Outside of your job, what other activities are you involved in?

See Also

I volunteer with Habitat for Humanity building houses. I’m also a member of Alachua County Emerging Leaders, as well as a member of the Gainesville Alachua County Association of Realtors Young Professional Network, and I serve as a Gainesville Chamber of Commerce Diplomat.

6. What do you do for fun in Gainesville?

I enjoy running and biking the trails of San Felasco, the Hawthorne Trail and Barr Hammock Preserve. I also enjoy seeing a good show at one of the live music venues, hanging out with friends in the downtown area at Depot Park or at one of the breweries or restaurants/bars. I recently discovered the game of Skee-Ball, which I’m hooked on now, and I try to find time to go fishing as often as possible.
