There’s No Business Like Show Business: Performing Arts in Greater Gainesville

One of Oscar Wilde’s most famous quotes is “Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” If that is true, then based on its visual arts scene, Greater Gainesville is vibrant and alive.

It is not uncommon to see a muralist creating a tribute to Gainesville on a public wall while other artists are painting, drawing or sculpting in parks, studios, and all over downtown.

Between the numerous festivals, galleries and museums, there is no shortage of opportunities for residents and visitors alike to come together and share in their admiration for art.

Bold, eclectic and teeming with talent, GG weaves its spirit and boundless creativity into a fine arts tapestry that any city would be proud to call their own. Whether it is the nationally ranked collegiate art programs, the myriad of artists that call the city their home or simply the general appreciation the community maintains for the arts, GG is a breeding ground for creative expression, and it shows.

Education is Art and Art is Education

The flourishing art scene in GG owes much to the strong cultural foundation established by the esteemed fine arts programs at the University of Florida and Santa Fe College.

The University of Florida’s College of the Arts, founded in 1975, offers comprehensive bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degree programs through its three fully accredited schools: the School of Art and Art History, the School of Music, and the School of Theatre and Dance.

Similarly, Santa Fe College’s fine arts program boasts a faculty of professional, practicing artists who provide guidance and instruction to over 225 Visual Arts majors. Both programs are highly regarded in the community and have produced nationally renowned artists.

Curating Culture

Residents of GG can immerse themselves in the visual arts at the Harn Museum of Art. Eleven galleries display nationally touring exhibitions and a portion of the 13,300-piece rotating permanent collection, curated in the 40,400-square-foot museum. Among the fine art is a familiar master, Claude Monet, whose Champ d’avoine has a place of honor in the museum.

The Harn at the University of Florida received 1,200 works of art from Samuel H. and Roberta T. Vickers in late 2020. The oil paintings, watercolors, drawings and prints — the largest single art collection ever donated to the University of Florida — depict Florida’s environment, people and history.

The Thomas Center Galleries is a beautiful setting within the former Thomas residence and hotel, containing many exhibits that rotate throughout the year, some featuring local art from Santa Fe College. The college also will soon debut the TranSFormational Art & Culture Center.

It comes as no surprise that many talented artists have made GG their home base, providing numerous outlets throughout the city for patrons of the arts to indulge in their passions.

Take a stroll downtown to view the larger-than-life murals that paint the city’s public spaces or attend the monthly Artwalk Gainesville that combines local art and exciting performances.

Whether it is found in the pale hues of a Monet painting or in the pinks and reds of a Florida sunset, art is not difficult to come by in GG. It is integrated into the city’s soul, deep and unflinching, welcoming all to share in the beauty that is art.

Get Involved: Greater Gainesville Art Organizations

Gainesville Fine Arts Association

Established in 1923, the Gainesville Fine Arts Association is a nonprofit organization and art gallery dedicated to supporting visual arts through exhibitions, workshops and programming for emerging and accomplished artists.

Alachua County Arts Council

On a mission to keep the arts vibrant throughout the county, the Alachua County Arts Council serves as a resource for local artists and art agencies. The ACAC has several “call to artists” underway. There are three at the new sports event center, two for fire stations, two for the new Court Services building and the Sankofa statue on the west lawn of the county administration building as well.

Cultural Arts Coalition

Founded in 1979, the Cultural Arts Coalition is a nonprofit that promotes African American arts and culture.

Responsible for many of the colorful murals throughout the GG, 352walls’ mission is to position Gainesville as a vibrant cultural destination through public art and design.

Monochronical

A marketplace for artists and art connoisseurs to network and create beautiful artwork, such as public murals, throughout the city of Gainesville.

Quinn Jones Museum & Cultural Center

The A. Quinn Jones Museum & Cultural Center, housed in the former Jones family home, serves as a tribute to one of the most influential educators in the history of Alachua County. The Museum features a permanent exhibit on “Prof” Jones, the people and places of the Fifth Avenue/Pleasant Street neighborhood and houses a collection of oral histories centering on the African American experience in Gainesville. The rest of the space hosts rotating exhibits.

Spring Garden Festival

March 22-23, 2024

Gainesville’s Spring Garden Festival celebrates the most natural art there is. The festival features about 125 booths offering plants, landscape displays and fine arts and crafts inspired by nature.

Spring Arts Festival

April 13-14, 2024

Sante Fe College’s annual art festival features fine art, available for purchase, made by artists from around the country, as well as live performances.

Break a Sweat! Greater Gainesville Residents Have Plenty of Ways to Get Out and Exercise

April 2024

Put on by the Cultural Arts Coalition, this festival hosts more than 20,000 people each year and features three days of performances and visual arts to share and promote the rich cultural history of the Fifth Avenue community.

Alachua County Artists Conference

May 2024

The Alachua County Arts Council presents this annual artist conference call for presenters. Artists and all attendees learn from other artists who are panelists at this event.

Downtown Festival & Art Show

November 18-19 2023

The 42nd annual Downtown Festival & Art Show transforms the streets of historic downtown Gainesville into a celebration of art and creativity with 200+ artists, live music, performing arts and delicious culinary experiences.

Welcome to the Mural Movement

The mural movement has made its way to GG and is here to stay. Local muralist Jenna Horner put if perfectly when she said, “Murals have a domino effect, when one comes, they entice people and they want more.”

Murals, and art in general, shift energy and uplift the experience for the local community. “They are great tools for unifying people,” Horner said.

Gainesville locals and full-time artists Jesus and Carrie Martinez are the co-founders of Visionary FAM, a mural production company that has graced the walls of various Gainesville businesses with more than 160 murals. Artists like the Martinez duo, and many others, have brightened the GG scene with their talents, time- and a lot of paint.

Experience the movement in Greater Gainesville by visiting the vibrant, local murals that not only highlight the area’s beautiful aesthetic, but also uplift those who pass by. There is something magical about an orphaned wall that has been brought back to life with paint and passion. Oh, and don’t forget to bring a camera.
