Ways to give back to the community

What may be deemed a basic necessity for most is considered a luxury to many individuals and families in the community. It is this time of year that folks are reminded to give thanks for shelter, warm clothing and nourishing food to enjoy with loved ones over the holidays, and it is also a time to give back.

There are a wide variety of charitable organizations who are accepting donations in several forms, and they make it easy to make a powerful impact this holiday season.

St. Francis House

Mission statement: Empowering families with children to achieve permanent and stable self-sufficiency by providing case management, nutritious meals and educational health and career resources in a safe and secure environment.

The St. Francis House offers donors several ways to give back to the community. The Amazon Wishlist is specifically helpful if donors are unsure what families and individuals at the St. Francis House are most in need of. There is also the option to select St. Francis House as an Amazon Smile charity so that every time an eligible purchase is made, a donation is sent to the charity of choice.

Peaceful Paths

Mission statement: We exist to save lives and create change.

Peaceful Paths is an organization supporting and working with families impacted by domestic abuse. This year, Peaceful Paths hosts the Neighborly November program, where donors can provide items from a predetermined shopping list or sponsor a holiday meal kit by donating directly to the website. Either option ensures that families will have a Thanksgiving meal to enjoy together.

Bread of the Mighty Food Bank

Mission statement: We collect, sort, store and distribute donated food and basic essentials to 170+ non-profit agency partners such as food pantries, churches, homeless shelters and other organizations who then distribute food in their communities to directly feed the hungry.

Bread of the Mighty Food Bank has been serving the community for 35 years through several programs including the Mobile Pantry, the After School Snack Program and the Gainesville Harvest. BMFB is collecting seasonal, shelf-stable items this month, such as canned green beans, yams, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Please note that pop-top cans are preferred for easier access.

GRACE

Mission Statement: To end homelessness by providing safe shelter, effective services and permanent housing solutions for people without any of the typical barriers that keep people from getting help.

GRACE offers several holiday initiatives for donors to help supply items that enable those in need to enjoy the holidays comfortably, such as curated care kits containing basic hygiene products or gently used coats and blankets. Visit the GRACE website to find other ways to help the community this season.
